News / Olson to Serve 2nd Fishery Council Term June 27, 2008, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today announced that her top nominee to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council has been approved by U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. Eric Olson has been appointed to his second three-year term. Olson currently serves as chair of the regional council.
Olson, of Anchorage, is a lifelong commercial fisherman who was born and raised in Dillingham. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Alaska Anchorage and is currently employed by Kwik'Pak Fisheries. Olson is completing his first term on the North Pacific Fishery Management Council and was elected chair in 2007.
“The North Pacific Council makes complex allocation and management decisions that are critical to the economies of our coastal communities,” Governor Palin said. “Eric has demonstrated strong leadership and brings valuable knowledge to the process.”
The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional councils established by the 1976 Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act, later renamed the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, to oversee management of the nation's marine fisheries. The council has jurisdiction over 900,000 square miles of ocean from three to 200 miles off Alaska’s shores, and has primary responsibility for managing pollock, cod, halibut, sole and other groundfish.
Olson’s term on the council will run through August 10, 2011.
