U.S. Commercial Service, High Street Partners, and Osborne Clarke present: Doing Business in Europe: Value Added Tax (VAT) Impact on the Bottom Line & Corporate Structure An in-depth half day workshop on understanding regulatory issues associated with conducting business with Europe, including an overview of regulatory issues, including Value Added Tax (VAT), Landed Costs, Permanent Establishment, contract issues, and their impact on doing business with European Union countries. Exporting goods into Europe ~ the process, the importance of importer of record, and appropriate documentation; ? How VAT works and how it affects a business; ? More detailed discussion of some of the issues around establishing a business presence in Europe PRESENTERS Mr. Roger Bevan: High Street Partners, Inc. Roger Bevan of High Street Partners specializes in international VAT matters with more than 30 years of experience. His career began working as an Inspector with HM Customs & Excise for 10 years during which he was auditor of business records and a specialist fraud investigator. After a short spell with Coopers & Lybrand, Roger joined Arthur Andersen in 1988. He became a partner in 1992 and recruited and managed a team of 35 professionals dedicated to VAT and customs matters, mainly dealing with US businesses wishing to begin or develop operations in Europe. In 1997, he joined Ernst & Young and again built and managed a team of 35 professionals all dedicated to VAT matters. In 2002, Roger developed his own business interests and focused his activities mainly on VAT as it affects international supplies of goods and services, as well as risk management and process issues in shared service centers, supply chain/distribution. Mr. Andrew James: Osborne Clark Andrew James is based in Osborne Clarke's Silicon Valley office and specializes in European antitrust law and commercial law, with a particular focus on the technology, telecoms and biotechnology sectors. He advises his clients on commercial and corporate transactions and the European regulatory rules that form an integral part of doing business in the European Union. Andrew gained an LLB (hons) from Bristol University in 2001, a post graduate diploma in legal practice from the University of the West of England in 2002, and a post graduate diploma in European Competition Law from University College, London in 2006. He joined Osborne Clarke in 2002, and moved to California in January 2008 Mr. Stephen Wilson: Osborne Clark Steve Wilson is a UK-qualified corporate lawyer with wide experience in representing US clients in relation to European legal issues. Steve's practice covers a broad range of corporate transactional and financing work, ranging from company start-ups to complex cross-border mergers and IPO's. He specializes in private equity and venture capital work, having represented a range of UK institutional investors and companies seeking funding. His sectoral focus covers technology, telecoms and cleantech, and prior to joining Osborne Clarke, he held the position of in-house corporate lawyer at Vodafone. Steve Wilson is well known to Osborne Clarke's European Alliance and Best Friend network and has extensive experience in leading and project managing multi-jurisdictional transactions. Steve graduated from King's College, University of London and completed his studies at London's College of Law. He is a certified Foreign Legal Consultant with the State Bar of California.
